CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
CertainTeed underlayment and roof deck repair in Dallas typically runs $1,200 to $4,800 installed, depending on how many sheets of decking need replacement and which CertainTeed underlayment product your roof calls for. We stock CertainTeed-compatible underlayment on our trucks and can usually complete a deck repair and underlayment replacement in a single visit, weather permitting. Most Dallas homeowners discover the problem the same way: a leak shows up on the ceiling, or a roofer peels back shingles during a repair and finds soft, water-damaged plywood or OSB underneath. The underlayment is the water-shedding layer between your deck and your shingles. When it fails, or when the deck itself rots, water gets through, and that ceiling stain is your first warning.
Key Takeaways:
- Underlayment is not a place to save money on a roof in Dallas. Our hail, heat, and humidity cycle punishes cheap felt faster than almost anywhere else in Texas.
- CertainTeed’s synthetic underlayment lines (RoofRunner and DiamondDeck) hold up far better than traditional #15 felt, but they still fail if the deck beneath them is already compromised.
- Every Mercer Roofing repair includes a written price before work starts, a 365-Day Done Right Promise, and a written guarantee on the work, with a free second visit if the repair fails.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes two primary underlayment families: RoofRunner, a synthetic underlayment rated for use under asphalt shingles, and DiamondDeck, a higher-performance synthetic rated for both shingle and metal roof applications. RoofRunner and DiamondDeck are both acceptable under CertainTeed shingle lines like Landmark, Landmark Pro, XT 25, and Presidential Shake, but they are not interchangeable in terms of exposure rating. If your existing underlayment is a peel-and-stick product like WinterGuard, which CertainTeed recommends for eaves, valleys, and around penetrations, that’s a different repair path: WinterGuard is an ice and water shield, and it also needs to be replaced when it’s torn, bubbled, or lost its bond.
In Dallas, the underlayment game is about UV exposure and heat. CertainTeed’s synthetic lines handle it better than felt, but any underlayment can get cooked if shingles blow off and leave it exposed to a North Texas summer for more than a week or two. When we inspect, we look at the underlayment’s surface for cracking, curling at the laps, or loss of the printed grid lines (which fade when the material degrades). If you can see the deck through the underlayment in more than a few places, it’s time to replace. We also check the deck itself. Dallas homes built before the early 2000s frequently have 3/8-inch plywood decking, which is thinner than the 1/2-inch OSB that’s standard now. Thin decking like that fails faster under foot traffic and hail impact, and it flexes more, which can crack underlayment over time.
A note for transparency: Mercer Roofing Co Dallas is an independent roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with CertainTeed, and we don’t claim to be. We install and repair CertainTeed underlayment because it’s a solid product, not because we have a licensing deal with the manufacturer. We also work with GAF and Owens Corning underlayments when the job calls for it.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment or Deck Is Failing
Underlayment and deck problems don’t announce themselves politely. Here’s what we see on Dallas roofs, week after week:
- Water stains on ceilings or in attic corners. Underlayment is the last line of defense before water hits the deck. A stain usually means water got past a shingle layer, through a compromised underlayment lap, and soaked into the deck. Every week that passes turns a $1,200 underlayment repair into a $4,000 deck replacement.
- Soft spots you can feel through the roof. If a roofer or a brave homeowner steps on a section of roof and it feels spongy, the deck is rotting. OSB and plywood lose structural strength when they hold moisture, especially in Dallas’ humid spring and fall seasons.
- Granules in the gutter with a brown tint. Granule loss is a shingle issue, but brown or dark grit mixed in often signals that underlayment is breaking down and shedding. CertainTeed synthetic underlayment does not granulate, but when the deck begins to degrade beneath it, the discolored water that runs off can carry deck fibers with it.
- Visible underlayment through missing shingles that looks cracked or shiny. Dallas hail storms peel shingles fast. When you look at the exposed underlayment and it’s cracked, or it’s developed a shiny, almost glazed surface, the heat has cooked it. That material is done. It’s no longer shedding water.
- Mold or mildew smell in the attic after rain. That smell means moisture is getting trapped between the deck and the underlayment. Even if you can’t see a stain yet, the deck is already wicking water, and it won’t dry on its own.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included in Dallas
For a typical Dallas single-family home, expect:
- Underlayment replacement only (no deck damage): $1,200 to $2,800, depending on roof size and which CertainTeed product goes back on. RoofRunner runs a bit less installed than DiamondDeck.
- Deck repair with underlayment replacement (1 to 8 sheets of plywood or OSB): $2,800 to $4,800, with the deck at $90 to $140 per sheet installed, including labor, fasteners, and code-required re-nailing.
- Full deck replacement on a large or steep Dallas roof: $5,000 and up. This is rare, but we see it on older homes in Lake Highlands and East Dallas where decades of small leaks have quietly eaten the deck.
Every Mercer Roofing quote is a written, line-item price before any work starts. No surprises on the invoice. And because this is repair work, not a full reroof, we include a written guarantee on every job. If the repair fails within 365 days, the return visit is free and we make it right. That’s the Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing, not a handshake.
DIY or Call Us?
Underlayment and deck repair on a roof is not a safe DIY project. The work is at height, on a sloped surface, and it involves removing shingles, exposing the deck, cutting out damaged sheathing, and reinstalling fasteners to code so the roof stays on in the next Dallas hailstorm. Falls from roofs are one of the most common serious injuries among homeowners who attempt roof work. We recommend you don’t climb up. What you can safely do from inside is check your attic after a hard rain with a flashlight, look for dark streaks on the underside of the deck, and call us with what you see. One of our background-checked technicians will come out, badged and in uniform, and give you a straight answer on what’s actually wrong. Call (432) 302-5605 for a free estimate.
FAQs
CertainTeed synthetic underlayment should last the life of the shingle roof it’s under, typically 20 to 30 years in Dallas, but that assumes the shingles above it stay intact. Our hail and wind cycles often break that assumption. If shingles get torn off and the underlayment sits exposed to UV through a North Texas summer, its lifespan can drop to a year or less.
Small tears and nail pops can be patched, but only if the surrounding material is still flexible and bonded to the deck. Once large sections are cracked, glazed, or the laps have opened, repair turns into a losing battle. Our rule is simple: if a repair will outlast the warranty we give you, we’ll recommend it. If it won’t, we’ll tell you to replace it. Call (432) 302-5605 and we’ll give you an honest read.
Most single-area repairs take one working day from start to finish in Dallas, including removing shingles, cutting out damaged deck, installing new sheathing, laying the CertainTeed underlayment, and re-shingling the section. Larger repairs across multiple roof faces run two to three days. We set the schedule at the estimate and keep it.
We stock RoofRunner and DiamondDeck on our trucks, along with decking fasteners and 1/2-inch OSB and plywood in standard thicknesses. WinterGuard peel-and-stick often gets ordered same-day from our Dallas suppliers, but it’s rarely more than a day out. We also carry GAF and Owens Corning underlayment equivalents for homes where the shingle manufacturer’s warranty calls for a matching underlayment brand.
