Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
Atlas underlayment and roof deck repair in Dallas typically runs $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on how many deck sheets need replacement and how much underlayment has to come up. We keep Atlas-compatible synthetic underlayment and CDX decking on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. Homeowners usually find out this part has failed when they spot water staining on a ceiling, feel a soft spot when walking the roof, or catch attic dampness after a North Texas downpour.
The roof deck is the wood layer everything else attaches to, and underlayment is the water-shedding barrier between that wood and your Atlas shingles. When either one goes, the shingles above are compromised even if they look fine from the street. That’s the part most people miss.
Which Atlas Models This Applies To
This repair path applies to any Atlas shingle roof, but we see it most often on Atlas Pinnacle Pristine, Atlas StormMaster Shake, and Atlas GlassMaster installations that have passed the 10-to-12-year mark. The underlayment beneath these systems is rarely an Atlas-branded product. Most Dallas builders in the 2000s and 2010s used generic #15 or #30 felt, which dries out and tears under Texas heat cycling. That means the failure point is often the underlayment, not the shingles above it.
If your original underlayment has a printed label, look near the eave for a product name or ASTM number. Synthetic underlayments carry ASTM D2269 or D4869 ratings. Felt products carry D226 or D4869. If you can’t find a label, a 12-inch square sample from under an eave tells us what we’re working with. For the deck itself, the key compatibility question is thickness: Dallas homes built before 1990 often have 3/8-inch plywood decking, which we always recommend upgrading to 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch CDX when we’re already in the roof. Newer homes typically have 7/16-inch OSB. We stock both Atlas-compatible synthetic underlayment options (we typically install RhinoRoof or Titanium UDL as a direct upgrade over felt) and OEM-equivalent fasteners rated for the Atlas shingle warranty.

Signs Your Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on ceilings or walls – This is the classic late-stage signal. By the time water shows up indoors, it has already passed through the shingles, underlayment, and decking. The deck is almost certainly soft or delaminated at the leak point.
- Soft spots or a spongy feel when walking the roof – Plywood delamination and OSB swelling both create that give underfoot. In Dallas, we see this most often after multi-day rains followed by 100-degree heat, which accelerates deck rot once water gets in.
- Attic dampness or a musty smell after rain – Underlayment that’s torn or pulled back at seams lets moisture through even when shingles are intact. The deck absorbs it, then the attic air turns humid. You’ll smell it before you see it.
- Visible underlayment sagging or drooping between rafters from inside the attic – If you can see the underside of your deck and the material between rafters is bowing or water-stained, the deck has lost structural integrity. This is a repair-now situation, not a monitor-it situation.
- Shingles that look fine but lift or flutter in wind – Fasteners pull loose when the deck beneath has softened. The shingle doesn’t fail. The wood holding the nail fails. In our Dallas inspections, this is the number one hidden condition we flag.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest math for Dallas. Deck replacement (plywood or OSB, including tear-off of the old sheet, new fasteners, and H-clips where required) runs $85 to $140 per 4×8 sheet installed. A typical repair uses 2 to 6 sheets. Underlayment replacement over the repaired area runs $45 to $75 per square (100 square feet) for synthetic, and $35 to $55 per square for felt if that’s what your roof spec calls for. Most whole-area repairs land between $850 and $2,400 total.
Every Mercer Roofing job in Dallas includes a written price before any work starts. No change orders on deck repair, period. If we open the roof and find one more sheet that’s soft, we’ll show you a photo, tell you the added cost, and get your okay before touching it. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the attic with a flashlight and look for water staining, sagging deck material, or daylight coming through at the eaves. You can also walk the roof carefully and note any soft spots. What you shouldn’t do is pull up Atlas shingles to peek at the underlayment yourself. Once you break the nail seal on a shingle, you’ve compromised the roof’s wind rating, and putting it back correctly requires knowing how Atlas shingles seat and how to avoid overdriving fasteners. If the deck has rot near the edge where you’re working, a fall risk enters the picture fast. This is a job where we’d rather you call us than climb up with a pry bar. Grant Whitlock has walked hundreds of Dallas roofs, and the repairs that cost the most are the ones where a homeowner started and then decided it was over their head. FAQs
Underlayment lasts 15 to 30 years depending on the material; synthetic products outlast felt by a decade or more. Decking lasts the life of the roof unless water gets in, which is why Dallas heat and hail make regular inspection the difference between a $400 fix and a $4,000 one. Call (432) 302-5605 and we’ll do an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.
Yes, small tears and pulled seams can be patched with compatible synthetic underlayment and sealed with butyl tape. If the deck beneath is soft or the damage runs wider than a few feet, a patch won’t hold. We’ll tell you which situation you have after a visual inspection. Estimates are free.
Most Dallas jobs are completed in 4 to 8 hours. We remove the affected shingles, replace the decking, install new underlayment, reinstall the shingles, and clean up the same day. If rain is in the forecast, we’ll tarp the area and communicate the schedule before we leave.
We stock synthetic underlayment, CDX plywood, OSB, fasteners, and sealants on every Dallas truck. We work with all major shingle brands, including Atlas, GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed, so the repair matches your existing roof system. Call (432) 302-5605 and we’ll confirm what we have before we head out.
